TRAVEL RECAP: CAPRI
I actually stopped by Matera before going to Capri, but I have so many Matera photos and stories, that I'll have to save that for another time. I also noticed that we took more video than pics in Capri- fingers crossed, I will be able to put that together sometime soon.
Anyhoo, moving along, the island of Capri is of course beautiful and if you can afford it, you should stay right on the island. Due to our budget and schedule, we decided to stay in Naples (I'll do a separate post on hotel reviews) and take the 45 minute ferry over to Capri for a daytrip. Doing the latter option, does afford you the ability to kill 2 birds with one stone; check out "gritty" Naples, try out real Neapolitan pizza (which is by far, my fave), while also enjoying all that Capri has to offer.
Our Capri mission was simple, we wanted to check out the Blue Grotto (or the Green grotto), the Faraglioni Rocks and check out the shopping streets of Capri for lots more gazing than buying (ain't nothing wrong with that).
We unfortunately were unable to do the first; note- sometimes the weather and tide makes it so boats can't go to the grotto, but really we were just pressed for time and we didn't want to feel rushed or deal with too many crowds. Friends of ours who did the boat tour, said it was well worth it, even though they too were not able to make it to the Grotto due to the high tide and choppy waters.
Few things to know:
Capri is not cheap, even little things like bottles of water, gelato, lemon granitas/slushies will cost more than you'd pay elsewhere. If you plan ahead and budget accordingly, you should be fine.
Unless you plan on taking bus, taxi, funicular, be prepared to walk or better yet, hike up some steep hills and stairs. Best thing is you do burn a ton of calories and you won't feel too guilty about pigging out later.
The Giardini du Augusto (Gardens of Augustus) are a worthwhile stop for pics, for the view and/or to relax. It's only 1euro to get in. I expected it to be much bigger just because I read alot about it, but really, it's the perfect size. Try to get in before the large tour groups so that you can enjoy a little peace and grab great pics without other tourists in every single frame. I'd say go earlier rather than later.
