A VERY ETSY HOLIDAY

Before I was SimplyCyn, I was Addicted2Etsy and in so many ways I still am. My first official foray into blogging was sharing the many amazing creators on Etsy and highlighting how the platform not only showcased great talent, but also gave so many of us access to unique and special pieces.

The first time I used Etsy as  a resource, as a guide, as a hub for a special event, was during one of the most special of them all- My Wedding. From my ring, to my veil, to our favors, most of the decor, my husband’s boutonniere and so very many things in between- Etsy had them.  I think what made purchasing and the transactions exciting, was that in each transaction there was a person, often the creator, designer, architect, the business owner right there- and that it was possible to  have genuine conversations about their creations. Some of those conversations could even feel like collaborations as there was often the option of discussing and working with the seller on personalized/custom pieces.

Having experienced a wealth of options that were available to me for my wedding, I was excited to give Etsy a go this year as I celebrate the holiday season with my friends and family. My goal, to create an intimate but festive table setting fit for my nearest and dearest. While I know there’ll be loads of big get togethers this season, I wanted to start by putting something smaller first. It’s also best to start small when you’re a novice at entertaining during the holidays. By the time I was done, I did feel a sense of confidence in what I was doing and ready to handle a lot more than I originally anticipated.

Generally around the holidays, Etsy helps the search by creating curated and editors lists fit for every occasion. I started my search by using one such guide. I knew I wanted a few things:

  1. Dinnerware and Glassware

  2. Table decor

  3. Candle holders

  4. Holiday centerpiece

  5. Linens- Napkins, Table runner etc

Some people get intimidated by all that is available on Etsy and may get overwhelmed. But I can assure you, with a roadmap in hand, a search was easy enough to complete. I relied heavily on the existing guides and also used previous customer reviews to gauge the reputation of the sellers and the quality of the items. Sometimes, you may even luck into a review with photos. There were other decision to be made, whether to go with brand new creations or vintage items. I ended up with a  mix. Vintage brass candleholders and a brand new custom made holiday wreath that I used as a centerpiece.

When you have the right pieces in hand, putting a beautiful table together was a breeze. It wasn’t only easy, it all felt extra special to know that I was supporting small business during this holiday season. Interestingly enough- a similar selection would have cost $$$ more if I had purchased from department store. As I see it, for my next holiday tablescape, I don’t have much reason to go anywhere else.
