Because it’s my birthday
Because I realized there’s really nothing I want/need this year
Because my friends, family and hubby have all asked what I wanted
and for some reason have refused to believe me when I say I’m good.
No shoes, no tech, no clothes, no bags (yikes) nothing really…
(although none of them was offering a trip around the world and paid time off)
and Because giving something can feel as good as getting
I’m giving one lucky reader, one little thing I realized I would appreciate for my birthday.
It’s the NY Times 36hours supa dupa coffee table travel book.
Reading this blog, you may have noticed that I love to travel near or far.
Lately due to time constraints etc, I have to stay near.
So this NYtimes travel book is the best
I have always loved their 36hours travel features
And this one is just for the great old US of A.
You’ll be surprised how many amazing places and things to see there are so close to home.
My copy is on its way and I can’t wait.

I’m probably gonna get some flack for this from the hubby and some others as I have received so many beautiful, wonderful, expensive, thoughtful gifts, but the best one, was from a girlfriend.
It was a framed picture of our crew of 4 girlfriends, while we were studying abroad together in Paris.
It was just perfect and what I needed- the memories and just everything.

An alarm clock. One of my best childhood friends got it for me when we were in 6th grade. She said that me always being late to school made her sad. I laugh at the rationale now, because my lateness was caused by my slow morning pace more than anything. Still, it's something I use every single day and I've had it for almost 10 years now. Still works perfectly– good and loud, has a radio, two alarm functions,works on battery or by plug, and gets my lazy butt in motion.

Being a vagabond and thrust into so many unique cultures completely transformed my perception.

He gave it to her when she emigrated to the United States to protect her on her long journey. That necklace was/is extremely special to her so the fact she was willing to give it to me for the same reason was very special.

Other people have commented with some really fabulous gifts, but here's mine anyway:
Back when I was about 10 or 12, I still really liked Barbies… it was my hush-hush hobby, but I just loved dressing them up and concocting stories for my dolls, then acting them out.
My Nana gave me a couple really nice, gorgeous porcelain dolls from her collection for Christmas one year.
My mom, of course, immediately forbid me from playing with them the way I played with my Barbies – not roughly, per se, but you know what I mean.
At the time, I resented the dolls a little bit, because they were doomed to sit in a corner of my room looking pretty but completely untouchable. As time has passed, they're still in the corner of my room, but I've come to appreciate them for being beautiful and a real token of love from my Nana, rather than a disposable plastic Barbie.
Also, this book looks INCREDIBLE. I got bitten by the travel bug earlier this summer and I've been itching to go out and see the world!

The best gift I've ever received was a trip to Rome during Christmas with my Dad. We spent 3 days there, toured the city and got to go to Midnight Mass at the Vatican and literally sat four rows away from the altar (somehow we sneaked our way into the VIP seating area, haha!). Happy birthday! That book looks wonderful! Travel has been the best gift I've received. I went to Mexico with my husband's family when I turned 21. It was my first international trip, and it holds many fond memories. For our honeymoon, my inlaws paid for our hotel room in Austria. I suppose my favorite gift that is an actual thing would be my wedding rings, they are gorgeous and unique!

I had not seen my best friend in almost 2 years and it was great to be able to re-connect after such a long time. It was simple just a cake and some flowers…why it was the best was the country that we lived in at the time did not make traditional birthday cakes. So he had to walk, catch a bus, get on a subway to pick up this cake and do all of that in reverse just to give me a small birthday celebration. Sometimes is it is just the smallest gestures that make the largest impact. Take care!

When my father passed away unexpectedly 3 years ago, it shook my foundation and caused me to 'wake up', to stop going through life and instead to live it. As a result, instead of cancelling my trip to Greece (I found out as I was heading to the airport), I took a deep breath, and felt my father urging me to continue with my dream, to be the best me, to LIVE, to love and to BE.
